UWE Bristol

The University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol has a strong history of heterodox and pluralist economics research and teaching. In recent years, UWE has become a centre for a growing group of early-career pluralist economists. 

Our research interests include political economy, development, the environment, income and wealth distribution, money and finance and methodology. Our teaching is strongly informed by this pluralist research agenda.

First year undergraduates take a compulsory module on History of Economic Thought and Methodology.  They study the ideas of  historical figures such as Smith, Ricardo, Marx and Keynes and examine key historical methodological debates. Core Microeconomics and Macroeconomics modules augment standard neoclassical material with ideas and theories from other schools of thought such as Post-Keynesian and Austrian economics. Students can take optional modules in Political Economy, Development Economics and Behavioural Economics.

In Autumn 2017, UWE launches its new flagship Masters programme, the MSc Global Political Economy. This cross-disciplinary programme draws on expertise in the Law and Politics departments and provides a unique approach to studying recent developments the global economic system.
