Open University

I am a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the Open University. I studied Development and Economics at SOAS, and gained a MSc in Development Economics and a PhD in Economics.

My main research interests relate to the HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa and draws on a range of disciplines including economics, development studies, public health and social epidemiology.  I am also interested in the introduction of heterodox and pluralist teaching into the standard economics curriculum in higher education institutions in the UK, and specialise in the teaching of the History of Economic Thought.

Recent research activities include the publication of a special issue of the Review of African Political Economy on ‘The Political Economy of HIV’ in September 2015 which I co-edited with Deborah Johnston and Matteo Rizzo, as well as articles published in Qualitative Research and Global Public Health.

I have co-edited (with Elisa van Waeyenberge, SOAS) a new textbook published in April 2020 titled ‘Recharting the History of Economic Thought’. This textbook takes and innovate, thematic approach to the subject with the aim of promoting pluralist economics education: https://www.macmillanihe.com/page/detail/recharting-the-history-of-economic-thought-kevin-deane/?sf1=barcode&st1=9781137605245

Many of the chapters will be authored by members of Reteaching Economics, and all proceeds will be used to fund Reteaching activities.
